Poitou Aquitaine
Arcachon
Arcachon is a seaside resort on a lovely lagoon about 45 minutes to an hour
from Bordeaux, and many residents of the famous wine capital keep cottages here.
The town was developed and quickly became popular in the mid-1800’s and
many celebrities (including Marilyn Monroe) found it a haven. It’s divided
into four districts that are known by the seasons. The Summer and Winter Resorts
are most famous, but they all have a different feel. Take a walk or drive through
the neighborhoods. Arcachon is also known for its fish, fishing, and oyster farms.
If this is your chance to be by the sea, go for it. It’s a painless drive
from Bordeaux and a pleasant destination for a day at the beach.

Cafés, Restaurants, and Bistrots
For a beautiful lunch and ambience away from the boardwalk and crowds, drive
a little further to Cap Periere - La Réserve du Parc. The restaurant is
located toward le Moulleau across the street from the sea in what looks like
a well-designed house. It is stylish and has a luxurious feel and an expansive
view of the ocean. We regretted we were too late for lunch, but the food must
be as splendid as the restaurant! It’s not on the typical tourist path,
so I suggest stopping by the Office of Tourism to get a map and ask for directions.
The menu looked expensive, but the promise of a long perfect French lunch was
irresistible.

For a more casual setting, drive a little further past Cap Periere toward
le Moulleau. You’ll find Le Goeland. The view is possibly better, and the
park and promenade in front of it provide a sense of serenity. People napped
and picnicked on the grass or strolled along the promenade by the Atlantic Ocean.
If the weather is warm, a trip to the beach would definitely be in order. The
tranquility here was divine. Fresh, delicious oysters, moderately priced.

Transportation
This is the second time we’ve come to France for an extended period
of time and leased a station wagon from Europe by Car. The first time I’d
read that if you were staying longer than three weeks, it was more cost effective
to lease. We made arrangements in the U.S., and both times picked up brand-new
cars—the first a Renault, this time a Peugeot. It couldn’t be easier,
and the cars have been great! They also come with insurance, which makes things
more trouble-free. At the end of your stay, you hand them back the keys. We’ve
driven all over France in these automobiles from Paris to Provence to the island
of Belle Ile. Jim is the driver, and I navigate. I highly recommend the company.
