Paris-
We
stayed at the Hotel St. Germain in the summer of 1998 with our daughters and
my mother, and we all fell in love with it! This 3-star boutique hotel is exactly
what we long for—intimate (29 rooms) and loaded with charm, effortlessly
sophisticated and elegant. The location is too-too—on the Left Bank’s
upscale rue du Bac and in one of our favorite Parisian neighborhoods, Saint-Germain-des-Pres.
Immersing yourself in culture is easy with the Orsay, Rodin, and Maillol museums
just steps away and the Louvre across the Seine. Shopping is sublime with the
brilliant Bon Marché nearby as are luxe boutiques such as Kenzo, Saint
Laurent, Armani and more, while antique shops line the rue du Bac. The ever wonderful
Deux Magots, Café de Flore, and Brasserie Lipp are near enough to stop
by for a drink and enjoy the café life or a meal.
What more can you ask? In this case, it’s the friendly and accommodating
staff (including Daniel, who we remembered from our first visit, and his compatriot,
Wanda), beautiful as well as comfortable rooms, and two handsome French bulldogs,
Jules and Ouen, who add to the feeling that you’re in a private residence,
a lucky houseguest. The delightful and well-dressed Michel Malvic (the picture
of male style) and his chic mother have created this graceful refuge that we
now call our Paris “home.” It is nothing less than our joy and our
pleasure to check in.

Scads of Paris apartments are available to rent, but sifting through the possibilities
on the Internet can make your head spin. We arrived in Paris in November, 2002,
with a reservation for a few days in what turned out to be a bad hotel. French
Home Rentals and its U.S. agent, Randall Vemer, were Johnny-on-the-spot for us
and solved our housing problem in a matter of hours. Randall is knowledgeable,
accessible, and generous with any help one might need. We were met at our well-located
Marais apartment by Ruben Milogis, FHR Paris representative and artist, who became
one of our friends. The one-bedroom apartment on rue du Perche was comfortable,
pleasant, and had everything we needed. We’d never spent any time in the
Marais before and fell in love with it while we were there. We also stayed in
another FHR apartment on the rue Ste-Croix-de-la-Bretonnerie. It was smaller
though more charming, and again, fit our needs. FHR owner, Michel Tessel, represents
properties throughout France.
