Transportation

The whole week before we left in 2002 I meant to arrange for a car to collect us from the airport. I didn’t want to land in Paris brain-dead with exhaustion and have to scramble for transportation with all our stuff. But I never got around to it, so we did. A man walked up to us and asked if we needed a cab. Jim said no, and I said yes. He had a van. His rate was fair, and he spoke excellent English. We got in, and it was a lucky meeting for us. Jacques Misery knows Paris, France, French history and culture, and just about everything I can think of that anyone might need. Jacques is also a guide and takes clients through Paris and in the nearby countryside like Brittany, Normandy, and the Loire Valley. We’ve hired him many other times and wholeheartedly would do so again.

The Paris Metro system is inexpensive, fast, and easy to use. During rush hour, it’s much quicker than a taxi. We learned the hard way by missing an art opening at the Louvre. Some times of day are busier than others, but even when it looks crowded, you can squish in. You can buy one ticket at a time or for more extended periods which make it even cheaper. It’s a plus to get a Grand Plan Touristique, a visitor’s map of the Metro Lines, when you buy your tickets. It’s bigger and easier to read than the small ones included on city maps. Metro stations are everywhere.

We’ve leased many cars from Europe by Car. It’s a much better deal than renting if you need a car for three weeks or more. The cars are brand new and come with insurance and roadside help if you have a problem. We made arrangements in the U.S. before we left. Our first car was a Renault and the second, a Peugeot. We were well-pleased with both. At the end of your stay, you hand them back the keys. We’ve literally driven all over France in these automobiles from Paris to Provence to the island of Belle Ile. We love to travel by car. It gives us much more flexibility to go exactly where we want and at the time that pleases us. I highly recommend the company.
